One big challenge with training is finding the right treats. They can be too dry, too wet, too hard, too crumbly, not high enough value, too big, too small, or just not quite right. Food roll treats can be awesome, but cutting them takes time and it can be tough to get them all the same size.
Enter: the magic of pyramid pan treats!
Pyramid pans are designed to help drain fat and other liquids while cooking meat, but when flipped they turn into the perfect mold for bite sized training treats. This is a great, easy way to make huge batches of perfectly sized, easy to chew and swallow treats. This recipe is for beef treats, but it can easily be modified for chicken, tuna, turkey, or any other protein that your dog loves.
The key to this recipe is the tapoica flour – other flours cause treats to be crunchy and hard. Tapioca flour makes these treats have a soft, chewy texture that dogs go nuts for. While they aren’t shelf stable, they store well in the fridge or freezer, especially if you freeze them spread out on a baking sheet with parchment paper before moving to a bag or other storage container (that way they don’t all get stuck together when frozen).
Whether you have picky dogs or dogs that will eat anything, being able to make your own high value treats is a great way to do something extra special for your four legged best friend. The best part about this recipe
Recipe:
- 10 oz ground beef (or other protein)
- 1 cup tapioca flour
- ½ cup white flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 tbsp oil
- Water as needed
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cook ground beef, draining fat as needed.
Blend all ingredients in a food processor or with an immersion blender, adding water as needed (batter should be the consistency of runny pancake batter with no lumps). The smoother, the better.
Put the pyramid pan with the hole side up onto a baking sheet. Pour batter onto pyramid pan and smooth until the lines between each pyramid are as visible as possible.
The cleaner the lines, the easier they’ll be to pop out. Cook for 12 minutes, let cool for 5 minutes then pop out. Repeat until batter is gone.
Refrigerate or freeze treats not used immediately.
